Volunteer to be a Referee
AYSO is a 100% volunteer run organization, from the Board members to the Coaches to the Referees, so it is imperative that we get volunteers to step up and become referees. We cannot have matches without referees, and the more we have the less a very few have to shoulder the burden for everyone.
But on top of that, I am going to tell you that it is a fun and rewarding thing to do, and there is almost no vantage point to watching the soccer being played than as a referee!
In Redwood City we have two referee tracks - one for the 8U division, and one for the 10U division (and older). The training is different between the two. Though many of the Referees in the 10U program started out as 8U referees (called "8U Official"), it isn't a requirement.
For both the 8U and the 10U divisions, we do have a requirement that each team produce at least one referee from within its ranks. This volunteer may be a parent or other relative, a family friend, or a sibling. In 10U there are some other additional requirements.
Youth Referees
For 8U we ask that youth referees be at least 10 years old, and for 10U the minimum age is 12.
