U10 tournament - 2011 (Last updated 11/12/11 @ 10:30 PM)

Pool Play Pools & Standings Pool Play Schedule - Boys Pool Play Schedule - Girls Playoffs Playoff Schedule

Coaches & assistants: Please be sure to read ALL of the information and make sure that you understand it. If you have a question please ask, don't assume. The finals results are posted. Congratulations to B08 and G11 who will represent Redwood City in the Area tournament.

Overview

The U10 tournament is designed to maximize the amount of games that teams will play and consists of two phases: pool play and sudden death playoffs. Pool play takes place on Saturday October 29th and November 5th. Sudden death playoffs are held on Saturday November the 12th with the finals on Sunday November 13th. All games are played on either 49er B (Boys) or 49er A (Girls). The winner of the boy's tournament and the winner of the girl's tournament advance to the Area 2N tournament which will be held on December 3rd & 4th in Foster city.

Coaches meeting

A MANDATORY pre-tournament coaches meeting will be held on Wednesday Oct. 26th, from 7:00 – 8:30 PM. This meeting will be held at the Red Morton Community Rec Center located at 1120 Roosevelt Av (NOT the CAB ... the gym). We will be in rooms 3 & 4.

Failure to send a team representative will result in a one (1) point deduction during pool play. At the meeting we will go over how to rate players as well as the tournament rules. You will need to turn in your player ratings prior to your first tournament match. Failure to do so, will result in a one (1) point deduction. Our apologies for the stick, but that is our only way of making sure this gets done.

General Comments

  1. Please keep the AYSO philosophies of Good Sportsmanship and Positive Coaching in mind during the tournament.
  2. Parents, friends, distant relatives etc. are the coach's responsibility. Please remind your parents that if they bring relatives & friends to the game that they need to behave in a respectfull manner.
  3. Alcohol and smoking are not allowed at AYSO events.
  4. Dogs, BBQs, food, sunflower seeds etc. (see the city signs posted at the fields) are not allowed on the synthetic all weather fields.
  5. Problems or issues that may arise will be resolved by the tournament committee, which shall consist of the Division Coordinator, the Coach Administrator, the Referee Administrator, the CVPA, and the Regional Commissioner.
  6. All decisions are final and no protests will be allowed.

Pool Play

Teams are divided into pools based loosely on season performance. The top tier teams are randomly assigned a pool, the next tier is distributed likewise (i.e. randomly), etc. This is done to create pools that are as balanced and random as possible. Each team will play four games, two on each weekend of pool play. Teams in a pool of 5 will play every other team in their pool once. Teams in a pools of 4 will play every other team in their pool once and will then play their 4th game(s) against teams from other short handed pools (it's complicated ...)

Games are scheduled from 8:00 AM until sunset in 40 minutes intervals. Due to this very tight schedule, you must have your team present and READY TO PLAY (at least 6 players, line up card ready, etc.) 15 minutes prior to the match. Please show up at the U10 shed, located near the 49er field, to be checked in. A forfeit will be declared if a team is unable to play (insufficient # of players, not checked in, no coach, no medical forms, etc.) within 5 minutes PRIOR to the scheduled start time. Teams must take the field immediately upon termination of the previous game. When your game is done, please leave the field and its vicinity as quickly as possible. The schedule is exceptionally tight so please help us make the tournament run smoothly.

  • Matches will consist of two 15 minutes halves
  • Half time will be 5 minutes and teams must return PROMPTLY to the field when summoned by the referee
  • Substitutions will ONLY take place at the half
  • Players that are present are required to play at least half of the match
  • All players must play at least two complete matches (Note: 4 half matches DO NOT make 2 complete ones)
  • An absent player will be counted as having played the whole match
  • A player who arrives after the match has started will be credited with having played that half
  • A different goalkeeper must be used in each half (goalkeeper changes will NOT be allowed during play except for injury)
  • Teams are not required to play down
  • There are no second chances on throw-ins or other incorrect restarts (the LOTG will be applied)
  • All other U10 rules apply
  • Matches may end in a tie

Points will be awarded/deducted and disciplinary actions taken as follows:

  • +6 points for a win
  • +3 points for a tie
  • 0 points for a loss
  • +1 point for each goal scored up to a maximum of 3
  • +1 point for a shutout (a 0 – 0 tie does not count as a shutout)
  • A forfeit will be scored as a 1 – 0 match in favor of the team that was present. If both teams forfeit then neither will receive any points.
  • –1 point for each caution (Yellow Card)
  • –2 points for each send-off (Red Card) nb: a 2nd caution in the same match will be counted as a total deduction of –2 points
  • –4 points if a coach or assistant coach is expelled
  • –2 points per substitution violation
  • The outcome of an abandoned or terminated match will be determined by the tournament committee
  • Additional points may be deducted, matches declared forfeit, or teams disqualified, if the tournament committee deems that necessary to deal with egregious situations
  • Player sanctions may also be imposed for misconduct, bad sportsmanship, or substitution violations as determined by the tournament committee

Tie breakers will be as follows:

  1. Head-to-head play
  2. Least points deducted
  3. Most goals scored
  4. Least goals allowed
  5. Kicks from the penalty mark (we hope that it does not come to this... The time and place will be determined by the Division Director)

Coaches, you need to plan your substitutions over the 4 matches to avoid having problems. On any given game the referees will only check to see if all players play at least 1/2 of the game. It is your responsibility to make sure that all of your players play two complete games in addition to playing half of every game. Line up cards will be reviewed at the end of pool play and points will be deducted for any substitution violations. We have had teams that did not move on from pool play because of substitution violations. If a player arrives late, is absent, leaves early, is injured etc., you should double check and make sure that this information is recorded by the referee on the lineup card. *** A team with more than four (4) substitution violations WILL BE DISQUALIFIED. ***

The top two (2) teams from each pool will advance to the playoffs. In addition, the two (2) teams with the best record from all the remaining teams, will also advance.

Pools & Standings

The top two (2) teams from each pool advance. Additionally, of the remaining teams, the two (2) teams with the most points also advance.

  • Teams B03 and B11 both have 19 points, and tied in head-to-head play. Neither team had points deducted and both teams scored four (4) goals and allowed three (3) goal. Which takes us to the final tie breaker... both coaches involved agreed to a coin toss which B03 won.
  • Teams B12, B10, and B04 have 15 points. Teams B12 & B10 tied in head-to head play and never met B04. None of the teams had points deducted. Teams B12 and B10 scored two (2) goals, while team B04 scored three (3). Team B04 is the final wild card team.

    Playoffs

8 teams will participate in the playoffs which will consist of quarter-finals, semi-finals, a consolation game for the 3rd and 4th place finishers, and a final. Boys games will take place on 49er field B, and Girls games on 49er field A.

    • Matches are single elimination
    • Matches will consist of two twenty five (25) minute halves
    • Half time will be 5 minutes and teams must return PROMPTLY to the field when summoned by the referee
    • Substitutions will take place approximately midway throught the first and second halves and at half time
    • No player will sit out two (2) quarters until all players have sat out one (1) quarter (referees will monitor this)
    • Players arriving late will be credited with having played each quarter that they are late
    • Playing down is not required
    • No one player may be a goalkeeper for more than two quarters (goalkeeper changes will NOT be allowed during play except for injury)
    • If a match is tied at the end of regulation play, two seven (7) minute overtime periods will be played. (Note: there is no golden goal).
    • Free substitution will be allowed during OT but only at throw-ins (on your possession), goal kicks (either team), kickoffs (either team), or injuries (only the injured player). Remember to get the referee's approval before substituting.
    • If the match is still tied at the end of the two overtime periods, then the winner will be determined by kicks from the penalty mark.
    • Only those players on the field of play at the end of OT may participate in kicks from the penalty mark. Coaches and substitutes must stay off the field during that time.
    • The outcome of an abandoned or terminated match will be determined by the tournament committee
    • A match may be declared forfeit, or teams disqualified, if the tournament committee deems that necessary to deal with egregious situations
    • Player sanctions may also be imposed for misconduct, bad sportsmanship, or substitution violations as determined by the tournament committee

    Playoff Schedule (Boys & Girls)

Playoff births are based on standings: All the first place teams from each pool and the top 2nd place team are assigned to different quarter-finals. The other teams are assigned to a quarter-final subject to the constraint that no team will play another team from the same pool. In addition, the top 2nd place team will be assigned a quarter-final that avoids it meeting the first place team from its pool in a semi-final. If possible, an attempt is also made to minimize the possibility that teams from the same pool meet in the semi finals.
