For those referees wishing to improve their skills and take it a bit farther the following courses are offered:
| This course is for Regional referees who have at least one year of experience and want to increase their level of understanding of the game and improve their refereeing skills. If you have three or more years of refereeing experience then it is highly recommended that you take this class. You will learn the tools you need to referee games that are more physically demanding and challenging and gain a deeper understanding of key elements of the game. |

Course objectives
- Know the referee's job description
- Utilize the diagonal system of control effectively
- Communicate effectively and correctly
- Memorize all aspects of the field of play
- Identify all fouls and all forms of misconduct
- Increase offside identification
- Become adept with AYSO Rules and Regulations

Signing Up
The Intermediate Referee Course is taught in Foster City by Area staff. For additional details and to sign up for the class, please contact the Area Director of Referee Instruction and check the Area 2N web site for any late breaking information. Class size is limited so please be sure and sign up early.
Prerequisites:
- Regional Referee Status
- Minimum of 14 years of age.
Intermediate Referee Certification
To become an Intermediate Referee you will need to complete the following steps:
- attend all of the class sessions
- score 90% or better on the Intermediate Referee exam
- be recommended for upgrade by the Regional Referee Administrator
- have refereed more than 25 games with a least 5 in U12
- be mentored by a referee mentor or assessor (at least one observation as referee is required, and one as an assistant referee is recommended
- have all you paperwork signed by the necessary individuals
You will be provided with the proper paperwork at the end of your class and the instructor will go over with you the steps you will need to take to complete the upgrade to Intermediate Referee.
Advanced Referee Course - 2008
The Advanced Referee Course is designed to train referees in the advanced skills needed to referee most upper level AYSO soccer matches.
Course objectives
- Be familiar with and competent in all aspects of the diagonal system of control
- Recognize complex issues relating to cooperation between referee and assistant referees and decision-making
- Demonstrate agility and physical fitness
- Practice aspects of mental and emotional preparation
- Recognize situations involving critical judgments regarding the giving of advantage
- Identify impeding an opponent's progress consistently
- Recognize, punish, and conduct send-offs
- Practice technicalities involving special goal scoring opportunities
- Discriminate punishement for players, substitutes, and others

This course will be taught at the Golden Gate Camp at St. Mary's College in Moraga from Friday August 1, 2008 through Sunday August 3, 2008.

Prerequisites:
- Intermediate Referee Status
- Minimum of 16 years of age.
Advanced Referee Certification
To become an Advanced Referee you will need to complete the following steps:
- attend all of the class sessions
- score 90% or better on the Advanced Referee exam
- have refereed more than 50 games (10 in U-14) and 5 as an assistant referee (in U-14)
- be assessed as a referee and an assistant referee in a U-14 match
- complete the Advanced Referee fitness test
- complete 5 service units (teaching/mentoring/assessing etc.)
- have all you paperwork signed by the necessary individuals
You will be provided with the proper paperwork at the end of your class and the instructor will go over with you the steps you will need to take to complete the upgrade to Advanced Referee.
National Referee Course - 2008
This is it! The top of the mountain.
Course objectives
- Define the role of a National Referee with an emphasis on officiating high-level matches.
- Focus on the officiating skills of communication, coordination and cooperation employed by an effective referee team.
- Explore the management and decision-making skills needed by officials doing upper-level matches.
- Emphasize the need for referee understanding of the tactics, objectives and principle of play employed by teams in regard to anticipating play and reading the game.
- Examine the line between gamesmanship used by players and teams within the spirit and letter of the Laws versus the activities outside the boundaries of fair play and sporting behavior.
- Recognize infractions or situations that have potential to lead to troublesome problems and techniques needed for dealing with serious misconduct.
- Practice employing the knowledge and techniques presented in this course through review and discussion of casebook scenarios.
- Acknowledge the role modeling responsibilities befitting the position of AYSO National Referee.

Prerequisites:
- Advanced Referee Status
- A minimum of 80 matches as a referee
- Minimum of 18 years of age.
National Referee Certification
To become an National Referee you will need to complete the following steps:
- attend all of the class sessions
- score 90% or better on the National Referee exam
- have refereed more than 100 games (30 in U-16 or U-19, with at least 15 in U-19) and 25 as an assistant referee (at least 10 in U-19)
- two assessments as referee in U-16 or U19 (at least one in U-19) and one as an assistant referee in a U-19 match
- complete the National Referee fitness test
- complete 5 additional service units (teaching/mentoring/assessing etc.)
- have all you paperwork signed by the necessary individuals
You will be provided with the proper paperwork at the end of your class and the instructor will go over with you the steps you will need to take to complete the upgrade to National Referee.
